New Options for Measuring Molecular Diffusion in Zeolites by MAS PFG NMR

چکیده
1. Introduction Combination of pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR with magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR is demonstrated to have remarkable advantages in comparison with conventional PFG NMR, if applied to diffusion measurements in beds of nanoporous particles, notably zeolites. These advantages are based on the effect of line narrowing and concern (i) a prolongation of the intervals during which the magnetic field gradients may be applied and a corresponding enhancement in the sensitivity towards small molecular displacements, and (ii) an enhanced resolution in the chemical shift scale. Both options are illustrated by measuring the diffusion coefficient of n-butane adsorbed in silicalite-1.

Determining Binary Diffusion Coefficients for Mixtures in Zeolites from PFG NMR, MD Simulation, and Theory
1. Introduction Practical applications of zeolites and other nanoporous materials always involve at least two different components, but understanding of multicomponent diffusion in zeolites is limited and experimental data are scarce. The elements of the multicomponent Fickian diffusion tensor for a given system may depend on the total loading of adsorbed molecules, the adsorbed-phase compositi...
متن کاملDiffusion in Porous Media
Porous media are of considerable interest in a very diverse range of activities. They comprise a wide variety of substances—plastics, ceramics, cements, clays, rocks, porous glasses, carbons, silica gels, zeolites, the recently emerging metal–organic frameworks and coordination polymers, and many more. Even biological tissues may share many features of porous media. Depending on the given natur...

1. Introduction The combination of MAS NMR spectroscopy with Pulsed Field Gradient (PFG) NMR opens novel possibilities for investigating diffusion processes of heterogeneous, non-liquid samples. The advantages are based on the effect of line narrowing and concern (i) a prolongation of the intervals during which the magnetic field gradients may be applied and a corresponding enhancement in the s...
متن کاملSorbate Transport in Carbon Molecular Sieve Membranes and FAU/EMT Intergrowth by Diffusion NMR
In this paper we present and discuss selected results of our recent studies of sorbate self-diffusion in microporous materials. The main focus is given to transport properties of carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes as well as of the intergrowth of FAU-type and EMT-type zeolites. CMS membranes show promise for applications in separations of mixtures of small gas molecules, while FAU/EMT inter...

1. Introduction Molecular diffusion is among the famous topics of current research on nanoporous materials [1]. Diffusion of molecules in porous media can be measured by a large variety of experimental methods. However, diffusivities measured with different techniques for the same system vary in several zeolitic systems over more than two orders of magnitude [2]. In many cases the origin of thi...
